The CIDA Empowerment Trust was first established in 2004, with the objective of raising endowments and annuities for investment, thereby enabling bursaries and scholarships to deserving, previously disadvantage, black South African students.

The CIDA Empowerment Trust has its roots in supporting the CIDA City Campus, through funding student bursaries for the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree at CIDA City Campus. Sadly, in December 2015, CIDA City Campus was placed into final liquidation, and closed its doors.

The CIDA Empowerment Trustees worked tirelessly to keep the school open, but when it became clear that CIDA City Campus would have to close, the Trustees responded to this dire situation enabling continuity for all students involved. CIDA Empowerment Trust facilitated the transfer of all CIDA Campus students still seeking bursary support, to the University of Johannesburg to continue their studies. The University of Johannesburg ‘s reputation for educational excellence and its long-standing good governance ensures a high quality education. Those students now registered for business degrees at the University of Johannesburg, will continue to be fully funded by the Trust, on condition of academic performance in line with contractual agreement.

As of 2017, CIDA Empowerment Trust will focus on providing bursaries to students committing to EDUCATION DEGREES, partnering with world-class, internationally recognized Universities.

    • Quality teacher development will yield inspired teachers, the most significant component to producing quality students.
    • Encouraging more degrees in Education will multiply those benefits, giving rise to an enhanced culture of learning for all young people.

Going forward, the Trust will adopt a more diversified investment strategy, with a more balanced portfolio mix, better aligned with the bursary funding requirements of the Trust.

The CIDA Empowerment Trust tertiary educational bursaries have enabled over 1300 deserving, historically disadvantaged students, to obtain graduate degrees.

Since inception, the Trust has grown its funds to over R100m, with annual distribution in bursaries averaging R7,5 million. Through funds from the Trust, over 100 students per annum have been the recipients of bursaries assisting them in meaningful and sustainable ways in their educational and career development.
